The Intimate Distance

The Intimate Distances collection draws inspiration from themes of solitude, isolation, and community. Through my research, I explored these concepts within my environment and personal perspective, ultimately concluding that solitude is not inherently negative. In fact, healthy human connections can only be formed when a balanced amount of solitude exists in our lives, creating space for creativity, self- reflection, and personal growth. Accordingly, the collection embodies two opposing poles that are essential to one another, coexisting in a symbiotic relationship. I examined these notions on both a physical and a conceptual level, associating them with sensory perceptions and emotions through my own interpretations. The garments representing solitude are designed to maintain healthy boundaries and create distance between the wearer and their surroundings. These are realized using soft materials that, through their structured forms, evoke a sense of sharpness and detachment. These pieces are crafted from leather and a uniquely knitted fabric developed using a special technique. Conversely, the garments symbolizing connection invite closeness, enveloping the body and conforming to it like a second skin, revealing every curve and contour. These pieces are made from firm yet airy and lightweight materials, creating a paradoxical sense of softness and resilience. For this collection, I challenged myself to diverge from my usual design approach, which typically starts with tailoring solutions. Instead, I focused on the inherent properties and structures of the materials, allowing them to dictate the form and silhouette. This method resulted in a series of garments that not only reflect the interplay between solitude and connection but also highlight the transformative potential of materials in shaping both physical and conceptual design.
